Practical Ways to Secure Your Garage Door

If you use your garage to store things like gardening equipment, home electronics or appliances, lawn equipment and other valuables, it’s likely that you want to make sure they are safe and secure. Many people store valuables in their garage. There are also some people who use their garage as workspace, where they may also have valuables, such as computers, printers and other things that are of value to them. What if you have decided to use your garage as a home gym? You likely have started investing in good equipment to create your home gym. When you have a garage that is attached to your home, you have to consider the possibility of someone breaking into your garage with the possibility of getting something that might also be of value to them. Since many homeowners do not take precautions to secure their garage door, burglars know that they can often get what they want simply by breaking into their garage. They also know the ins and outs of how security systems operate and in which parts of your home a person will seldom connect the system. Unfortunately, the garage door is one of the most susceptible areas of your home to be compromised. Simply put, homeowners rarely secure their garage door like they would do their home doors and windows. At Secure Menifee Locksmith, we are here to tell you that you can avoid a garage break-in.

The Right Type of Garage Door

If you want to make sure no one breaks into your garage, it is important that you select a good durable garage door. A good, strong and sturdy garage door would be one that is made from steel and one that rolls up. These offer you a great deal of durability and are cost-effective.
Garage Look

Many people make the mistake of thinking that the garage door opener is all that they need in order to secure their door. This is not true. In order to secure the structure of your garage door, you’ll need a lock and we are not talking about a regular door lock. A burglar can easily break this type of lock. When we tell you that you need a lock on your garage door, you have to invest in a heavy-duty, durable deadbolt lock. If a burglar realizes that you have this type of lock, it is unlikely that they will attempt to break into your garage. It is a lock that will just take too long to break through. The deadbolt lock is one of the most durable locks you can add to your door. You might also consider installing the following types of locks to your garage door, depending on the type of lock you have.

    1. Padlocks – A padlock is easily removed. You’ll need to put a bar on your door so that a padlock can be installed on the door.

    2. Bolt – Even though deadbolts are also referred to as a bolt lock, we are referring to having a bolt installed through the tracks of your door. The problem with this type of equipment is that you’ll need to remove it when you are coming and going. This can be a little bit of an inconvenience.

    3. Anchors – Concrete anchors are sometimes used to keep the door from being opened from outside.

Garage Door Windows

One of the biggest problems with having a garage door with a window is that a burglar can look inside to see whether or not you have something they want. If they do, they might just make your home their next target. We are not discouraging anyone from buying a door with a garage door or having garage door windows installed for aesthetic purposes, but we can tell you how you can keep thieves from looking inside your garage. The windows can be tinted or you can hang a window covering over the window. It might not look as nice but it is worth doing to keep a burglar from looking inside. It is unlikely that a thief will assume that you have something in your garage that they want. They are less likely going to break into a garage when they do not know what they stand to gain. They will just go to another home where they can look inside to see whether or not it is worth the risk. Tinting your windows can certainly be a good idea if you want to make sure you’re home is not the target of burglars.

Security Features to Consider

Having a security system is a good idea but having your garage door programmed into the system is even a better idea. It is beneficial for keeping your home and garage safe. In addition to a security system you may also want to consider the following security features:

  •  Iron Gate
  • Window Grills
  • Lock with rolling codes

Rolling codes are difficult for a burglar to steal

    Secure side or back door

If you have a side door or one in the back of your garage, don’t forget to place a lock on it and have it connected to your home’s security system. If you are unable to add it to your security system, we would strongly suggest that you have a solid, durable lock placed on it.

Our Final Thoughts

Now that you see just how simple it is to make sure no one is able to break into your garage, what are you going to do? If you have a garage door window, make sure that nobody can see through the window. Side doors or back doors need to be secured with a durable lock. If you’re able to add a lock and bar to your garage door, we would suggest that you do so. Make good use of your garage door opener’s features that enable you to secure your door. Consult your manual to determine what which features will enable you to better secure your garage door.
